For my latest project I've been experimenting with something a bit different - compositing with satellite photos.
The image takes the form of a Bogong Moth,
created from satellite images sourced from Digital Earth Australia.
Bogong Moths are an endangered species - among the first where we can directly attribute that decline to climate change. Longer and more intense droughts, combined with rising temperatures in the caves they call home as led to an increasingly steep decline in their numbers over the last 40 years, accelerating sharply in the last 5 years. Their decline in numbers is causing knock on effects for the species that call them food, such as pygmy possums.

They call two places home - western NSW during the winter and the Australian Alps during the summer. This image is made from satellite images of these two respective areas. I focused on the Murray catchment in drought for the wings and the alps south of Canberra for the body. The surrounding salt pans are sourced from an empty Lake Victoria, NSW.
